Foraging For the Flock

We had some questions about foraging outside for your bird recently so I thought it would be a great idea to review! Foraging, simply put, is finding edible items that were not planted by humans.

In general, if it's an item safe for people and doesn't have any contraindication (for example, we know grapefruit sometimes interacts with medications), it's safe to give in moderation as a part of their normal diet. The other major thing to know is whether or not a plant has been exposed to any pesticides, herbicides, or other environmental contamination. Plants in our yard that have been sprayed, are on road sides, in ditches or are in driveways are not safe to give to your bird. ALWAYS BE 100% SURE of your plant identification.

Most of the non-native plants we think of as lawn weeds were originally introduced as food items or herbal medicine items. The most recognized edible “weed” is definitely the dandelion. All parts are edible, and in fact the root is a great item to give to **birds with liver disease. Other easy finds are wild violets, clover flowers, and chick weed.
